My philosophy of education supports the notion that each student deserves a holistic and culturally relevant education that fosters their academic, social, and emotional development. It is my ambition to fulfill this so every student's needs are met and they have the tools to reach their fullest potential as learners and active citizens.
The learning environment should be a space where students feel safe and supported to learn, grow, and explore their wonders. Through my teaching experiences with children, I have learned that each child offers a unique contribution to the learning community which must be considered when planning lessons, activities, assessments, and co-constructing learning goals and success criteria. I believe that highlighting individual strengths and voices is necessary for students to feel seen, heard, and valued in their environment enabling a sense of belonging, and in turn, a greater opportunity for engagement and success. I achieve this by taking the time in getting to know every child which follows open communication and collaboration between myself, my students, their families, and other key educational stakeholders to allow for shared learning that encompasses multiple voices to advocate for every child.
As an educator, it is my passion to see my students succeed. I support a progressive classroom structure, rooted in John Dewey's philosophies that advocate teaching to the whole child, rather than on specific content. I notice that when the focus shifts from the curriculum, to including the student's interests and strengths within the curriculum, the outcome results in empowerment and the attainment of goals. In practice, I provide opportunities for students to "think aloud" to hear their thinking and understand that there are multiple ways to achieve a solution.
Cumulatively, I am fortunate to have had positive experiences as a student which has shaped the individual I am today. I recognize not all students have had positive experiences at school, therefore, it is of utmost importance to me that their time learning with me is joyful, and rooted in my values of kindness, equity, inclusion, empathy, and explorative learning. Partaking in professional development classes while continuously reflecting on my practices and beliefs helps me to advance myself as an individual, educator, and role model to others. Learning is a life-long process, therefore I am committed to learning with, from, and for my students, along with others, to ensure the best possible educational opportunities for my students.
