My trip to Uganda was the most enriching and meaningful experience I have encountered in life. I travelled there to teach students English as well as host a workshop on assessment and instructional strategies for teachers. I went anticipating that I would return home feeling internally rewarded, however, I returned home feeling internally grateful for all the insights the students taught me! I was most touched by them showing me the value of the little things in life I, among many in our Westernized society, take for granted.
The appreciation of education in a developing country is unimaginable to the typical classroom in Ontario. Students welcome new learning opportunities with an open mind, wonder, and appreciation. I developed a greater appreciation for the diversity of experiences and learning styles, as well as enhanced my cross-cultural communication skills. I practiced flexibility in having to differentiate and adapt lessons on the spot to meet the needs of learners. I was able to recognize that childhood is not a universal notion and began to see the world through the eyes of a child residing in Uganda. This inspired me to seek out new professional learning opportunities in how to become more culturally responsive in practice.
The students at Amazing Love School continue to drive my passion for giving back to the community and advocating for equal access to education. It is by living in solidarity and collaborating with others, we can create a more just society that contributes to the common good.
